Po opublikowanym niedawno (10 lipca 2025 r.) artykule “Lara United FC – naprawdę Zjednoczeni!” (https://historiasportu.umcs.lublin.pl/ ) kilku moich przyjaciół z grona tych, którym sport i jego kondycja
u progu XXI wieku mocno leżą na sercu, z pewnym sceptycyzmem, a raczej ambiwalencją, odniosło sie do prezentowanych w nim treści. Z jednej strony był to rodzaj podziwu wobec klubu stanowiącego wyjątkową, opartą na miłości do sportu wspólnotę, a drugiej rodzaj niedowierzania, że jej stworzenie
i sprawne funckjonowanie jest w ogóle we współczesnym świecie możliwe. Jeśli miałbym dociekać powodów tej kontestacji, to opinie niedowiarków krążyły zapewne wokół myśli, że we wspomnianym artykule stworzyłem jakąś “sportową utopię”. Lara w perspektywie Polaków leży sobie przecież gdzieś tam na końcu świata, a opowieść o miejscowym klubie mieścić można poniekąd w charakterze stereotypowych wyobrażeń o Australii, pełnej endemicznych zjawisk naturalnych, które być może przełożyły się też na archaiczne, bo sięgające początków nowożytnego sportu zachowania ludzi. W tych wyobrażeniach Lara United FC mogła zatem uchodzić za rodzaj wyspy, zamkniętej enklawy hermetycznej na całe zło współczesnego sportu.
Following the recent publication (10 July 2025) of the article „Lara United FC – truly United!” (https://historiasportu.umcs.lublin.pl/ ), several of my friends who care deeply about sport and its condition at the dawn of the 21st century reacted with some scepticism, or rather ambivalence, to its content. On the one hand, there was a kind of admiration for the club as a unique community based on a love of sport, and on the other, a kind of disbelief that its creation and efficient functioning is even possible in the modern world. If I were to speculate on the reasons for this contestation, the opinions of the sceptics probably revolved around the idea that in the article I had created some kind of ‘sports utopia’. From the perspective of Poles, Lara is located somewhere at the end of the world, and the story of the local club can be seen as a stereotypical image of Australia, full of endemic natural phenomena, which may have also translated into archaic behaviour, dating back to the beginnings of modern sport. In these perceptions, Lara United FC could therefore be seen as a kind of island,
a closed enclave hermetically sealed off from all the evils of modern sport.
W przekonywaniu, że klub nie jest wytworem imaginacji (“moją utopią”) mało skuteczne okazywało się wskazywanie stron WWW klubu i jego obecności na Facebooku. W orężu malkontentów pozostawała broń najcięższego kalibru – „Byłeś przecież tam krótko, a Twoje obserwacje mogły być zapewne pobieżne, powierzchowne i przypadkowe!”. Stąd zrodził się pomysł, aby moje spostrzeżenia zweryfikować, sięgnąć niejako do źródeł sukcesu/fenomenu Lara United. Przyznam szczerze, że nie trzeba było specjalnej protekcji i czynienia wielkich zabiegów, aby spotkać się i porozmawiać z prezesem klubu, choć to osoba, która na nadmiar wolnego czasu z pewnością narzekać nie może (sam mówi zresztą o sobie, że jest pracoholikiem!). Nie ukrywam, że dodatkowym motywem nakłaniającym mnie do rozmowy z Paul’em Grzybek było jego swojsko dla Polaków brzmiące nazwisko.
In convincing others that the club was not a figment of my imagination (“my utopia”), pointing to the club’s website and Facebook page proved ineffective. The malcontents had a weapon of the heaviest calibre at their disposal: ‘You were only there for a short time, and your observations were probably cursory, superficial and random!’. This gave rise to the idea of verifying my observations, of reaching, as it were, to the sources of Lara United’s success/phenomenon. I must admit that it did not take any special protection or great effort to meet and talk to the club president, even though he is a person who certainly cannot complain about having too much free time (he himself says that he is a workaholic!). I must admit that an additional motive for me to talk to Paul Grzybek was his surname, which sounds familiar to Poles.
Zawsze stanowi ono asumpt do rozważań o dramatycznych i wielce skomplikowanych losach naszych rodaków, których traumatyczne wydarzenia XIX i szczególnie XX wieku zmuszały także do niezwykle odległych peregrynacji. Życie Zygfryda i Edwarda Grzybek, przodków Paula, są tego znakomitym przykładem, choć opowieść o ich korzeniach i życiowych przewagach tworzą materię do zupełnie innych rozważań. Z tych powodów trudno było uciec od wątków czysto biograficznych – dość powiedzieć, że
w domu Paula i Kylie (to imię niezwykle sympatycznej małżonki Paula, o której słów kilka poniżej) znajduje się relatywnie sporo polskich śladów. Skoro jednak umówiliśmy się na rozmowę o “Lara United”, to konsekwencją musi być skoncentrowanie mojej uwagi na kwestaich sportowych. Wszyscy, którzy znają moje podejście do sportu już teraz mogą się domyślać, że nie roztrząsaliśmy kwestii wyników sportowych… Rezultaty, punkty i gole zeszły na dalszy plan opowieści Paula i Kylie o ich wizji sportowej wspólnoty, jaką w od wielu lat współtworzą w kilkunastotysięcznej Lara. Konwersacja trwała ponad dwie godziny i nie sposób oddać wszystkie poruszane w niej wątki. Proszę się zatem nie dziwić, że poniższy tekst nie jest klasycznym wywiadem, a raczej relacją z tematycznego spotkania (niewolną zresztą od pewnych dygresji).
It always gives rise to reflections on the dramatic and highly complicated fates of our compatriots, whom the traumatic events of the 19th and especially the 20th century forced to undertake extremely distant journeys. The lives of Zygfryd and Edward Grzybek, Paul’s ancestors, are an excellent example of this, although the story of their roots and life advantages provides material for completely different reflections. For these reasons, it was difficult to avoid purely biographical themes – suffice it to say that there are quite a few Polish traces in the home of Paul and Kylie (the name of Paul’s extremely likeable wife, about whom I will say a few words below). However, since we agreed to talk about Lara United, I must focus my attention on sports issues. Anyone familiar with my approach to sports can already guess that we did not discuss sports results… Results, points and goals took a back seat to Paul and Kylie’s story about their vision of a sports community, which they have been co-creating for many years in Lara, a town of several thousand inhabitants. The conversation lasted over two hours, and it is impossible to convey all the topics discussed. So please do not be surprised that the following text is not a classic interview, but rather an account of a thematic meeting (not without certain digressions).
Dla mnie niesłychanie ważne były okoliczności i atmosfera spotkania – swego rodzaju symbole, sygnały wartości w klubie szczególnie pielęgnowanych. Rozmawialiśmy w dniu dla właściwego funkcjonowania klubu bodaj najważniejszym. W czwartkowy zimowy wieczór (24 lipca 2025 r.) obiekty klubu tętniły życiem i mimo przenikliwego chłodu wszystkie boiska dosłownie okupowane były przez odbywające trening wszystkie futbolowe grupy wiekowe. Zadziwiło mnie to, że seniorzy sympatycznie “obcowali”
z młodzikami, nie tworząc w kontakcie ze sobą żadnych sztucznych barrier. Ot, taka solidarność klubowa! For me, the circumstances and atmosphere of the meeting were extremely important – a kind of symbol, a sign of the values that are particularly cherished at the club. We talked on what was probably the most important day for the proper functioning of the club. On that winter evening (24 July 2025), the club’s facilities were bustling with life, and despite the bitter cold, all the pitches were literally occupied by football teams of all ages training. I was amazed to see the seniors interacting warmly with the youngsters, without creating any artificial barriers between them. That’s club solidarity for you!
Myślę, że przejawem tej wspólnotowości był też strój mojego rozmówcy – sportowa klubowa kurtka,
w której paradowali obok również trenerzy i zawodnicy (przyznam szczerze, że raczej nie obawiałem się obecności biznesmana w nienagannie skrojonym garniturze…). I think that my interlocutor’s attire was also a manifestation of this sense of community – a sports club jacket, which was also worn by coaches and players (I must admit that I was not particularly concerned about the presence of a businessman in an impeccably tailored suit…).
Generalnie było zatem dość gwarno (na boiskach pracowicie!), choć to niejedyny powód dla którego rozmowa przeniosła się do klubowego pawilonu. W jego wnętrzu znajduje się bowiem wiele klubowych pamiątek, które w rozmowie o klubie okazały się wartościowym, choć tylko uzupełniającym materiałem ilustracyjnym. Moją uwagę skupiła tarcza herbowa z umieszczonymi na niej tabliczkami z nazwiskami osób najbadziej dla klubu zasłużonych. Nazwisko Paula pojawia się na niej dwukrotnie. Został on bowiem “Człowiekiem roku FC Lara United” już w roku 2018, a zaszczycono go tym tytułem ponownie w 2023 r.
In general, it was quite noisy (the pitches were busy!), but that was not the only reason why the conversation moved to the club pavilion. Inside, there are many club memorabilia, which proved to be valuable, albeit only supplementary, illustrative material in the conversation about the club. My attention was drawn to the coat of arms with plaques bearing the names of the people who have contributed most to the club. Paul’s name appears twice on it. He was named ‘FC Lara United Man of the Year’ in 2018 and was honoured with the title again in 2023.
Wyróżnienia te nie wzięły się znikąd, bo wieńczyły opartą ciągle na wolontariacie i altruizmie pracę Paula na rzecz klubu rozpoczętą na długo przed trudnym dla jego funlkcjonowania rokiem 2018. Dopiero w sezonie 2019 (w listopadzie) mój rozmówca zaczął pełnić obowiązki prezesa klubu, występując w trochę niewdzięcznej roli ratownika nienajlepszej wtedy kondycji stowarzyszenia (zawsze to zadanie niewdzięczne, bo wielce ryzykowne). Udało się i wówczas wyprowadzić klub na prostą, co doceniono formalnym już wyborem Paula na prezydenta Lara United dokonanym przez Walne Zgromadzenie Członków (Annual General Meeting). Warto w tym miejscu zwrócić uwagę, że wszystko to działo się
w najbardziej demokratycznych i transparentnych okolicznościach. O kierowaniu nawą klubową istotnie rozstrzygają jego członkowie, których decyzje mają merytoryczne uzasadanienie. Ciekawe, że prezydentem zostaje się tylko na jeden rok i wobec tego działania władz klubu muszą być szybkie
i skuteczne, a nie ograniczać się do zapowiedzi, deklaracji i obietnic. Wieloletnie kierowanie lub współkierowanie klubem oparł Paul na pewnej strategii, której celem było stworzenie w Lara “największego i najbardziej profesjonalnie zarządzanego lokalnego klubu w regionie Geelong”.
These honours did not come out of nowhere, as they crowned Paul’s work for the club, which was still based on volunteering and altruism, and which began long before the difficult year of 2018. It was not until the 2019 season (in November) that my interlocutor began to perform the duties of club president, taking on the somewhat thankless role of rescuer of the association, which was not in the best condition at the time (always a thankless task, because it is very risky). He succeeded in getting the club back on track, which was recognised by Paul’s formal election as president of Lara United by the Annual General Meeting. It is worth noting here that all this took place in the most democratic and transparent circumstances. The club’s members, whose decisions are based on substantive grounds, have a decisive say in the management of the club. It is interesting that the president is only elected for one year, and therefore the club’s actions must be quick and effective, rather than limited to announcements, declarations and promises. Paul based his many years of managing or co-managing the club on a strategy aimed at creating ‘the largest and most professionally managed local club in the Geelong region’ in Lara.
Jeśli zakładać, że klub działa ciągle na zasadzie wolontariatu i amatorstwa, to skala trudności w realizacji tego zadania była niezwykle trudna. Priorytetem okazały się zabiegi związane z pozyskiwaniem sponsorów, a w tym zakresie Paul okazał się niezwykle skuteczny. Z pewnością pomagała mu w tym ogromna determinacja, otwartość, natura prawdziwego społecznika, miłość do sportu i postrzeganie jego roli jako ważnego czynnika integrującego społeczność lokalną. Pukał do wielu drzwi i efektywnie udało mu się pozyskać wsparcie lokalnego biznesu.
Assuming that the club continues to operate on a voluntary and amateur basis, the scale of difficulty in accomplishing this task was extremely challenging. The priority turned out to be efforts related to acquiring sponsors, and in this regard, Paul proved to be extremely effective. He was certainly helped by his enormous determination, openness, true community spirit, love of sport and perception of its role as an important factor in integrating the local community. He knocked on many doors and successfully managed to gain the support of local businesses.
Widoczna na klubowych koszulkach i banerze nazwa firmy Bisinella Developments, wiodącego dewelopera gruntów w Geelong, wskazuje głównego sponsora klubu piłkarskiego Lara United (Lara United FC) od ponad ćwierćwiecza. Śmiało rzec można, że Bisinella to prawdziwy partner klub, który odegrał kluczową rolę w jego rozwoju. The name Bisinella Developments, a leading land developer in Geelong, appears on the club’s shirts and banner, indicating that it has been the main sponsor of Lara United Football Club (Lara United FC) for over a quarter of a century. It is safe to say that Bisinella is a true partner of the club and has played a key role in its development.
Równie skuteczne okazały się zabiegi związane z pozyskaniem środków finansowych ze strony samorządu. Ważną rolę w zapewnieniu tej pomocy odegrała małżonka Paula, radna City of Greater, Kylie Grzybek. Dzięki tej przemyślanej, biegnącej dwutorowo polityce sponsoringu w sezonie 2019/2020 otwarto nowy pawilon z przestrzenią socjalną, w tym szatnie dla kobiet. 2021 roku zainstalowano oświetlenie sportowe, warunek sine qua non pełnego wykorzystania obiektów klubowych. Rok później klub otrzymał kolejne dotacje na wykonanie ogrodzenia całego boiska i odnowienie szatni dla zawodników. Latem 2024/2025 przeprowadzono natomiast remont nawierzchni klubowych boisk. Takim menadżerskim dossier mógłby ochwalić się niejeden profesjonalny prezes klubu!
Efforts to obtain funding from the local government proved equally effective. Paul’s wife, City of Greater councillor Kylie Grzybek, played an important role in securing this assistance. Not only for this reason was Kylie chosen as ‘Volunteer of the Year 2023’. Thanks to this well-thought-out, two-pronged sponsorship policy, a new pavilion with social space, including women’s changing rooms, was opened in the 2019/2020 season. In 2021, sports lighting was installed, a sine qua non condition for the full use of the club’s facilities. A year later, the club received further grants to fence off the entire pitch and renovate the players’ changing rooms. In the summer of 2024/2025, the club’s pitches were resurfaced. Many a professional club president would be proud of such a managerial track record!
To coraz lepsze zaplecze, doskonalona infrastruktura, a zwłaszcza zaangażowanie wszystkich członków zarządzanego przez Paula klubu złożyły się na sukces sportowy. W 2024 r. seniorzy klubu awansowali do wyższej ligi stanowej, a próżno lekceważyć też nieco wcześniejsze osiągnięcia i mistrzowskie tytuły drużyny kobiecej (I liga stanowa!). Prezydent klubu nie ukrywał, że był to dla niego nie lada problem organizacyjny. Automatycznie wzrosły koszty uczestnictwa drużyny w już profesjonalnych rozgrywkach logowych. Nawiązano współpracę klubu z Football Star Academy, aby pomóc w doskonaleniu umiejętności zarówno graczy, jak i trenerów. Jednocześnie zintensyfikowano pracę w najmłodszymi grupami wiekowymi.
Improved facilities, upgraded infrastructure, and, above all, the commitment of all members of the club managed by Paul contributed to its sporting success. In 2024, the club’s seniors were promoted to the higher state league, and the earlier achievements and championship titles of the women’s team (state first league!) should not be underestimated either. The club president made no secret of the fact that this was a major organisational challenge for him. The costs of the team’s participation in professional league competitions automatically increased. The club established cooperation with the Football Star Academy to help improve the skills of both players and coaches. At the same time, work with the youngest age groups was intensified.
Nowym wyzwaniom sportowym towarzyszyły te natury logistycznej, a przecież klub – co Paul stale powtarza – jest i pozostaje w swej naturze amatorski. Priorytetem zarządu musi być zatem rozbudowa wolontariatu. Prezes liczyć tu może na ciągłe wsparcie Kylie, która jest skarbnikiem i sekretarzem klubu. Wolotariuszami są także wiceprezydenci klubu (opiekujący się poszczególnymi grupami wiekowymi zawodników) oraz osoby odpowiedzialne za kierowanie pracą klubowej kantyny, przygotowanie boisk, kontaktów z mediami etc. Zarządowi klubu zależy na dobrej koordynacji pracy wszystkich jego struktur. Ważnym zadaniem staje się również zwiększenie liczby członków. W tej chwili ta społeczność liczy ponad 400 osób!, ale pracy i obowiązków jest tak wiele, że dla każdego znajdzie sie jakieś ważne zadanie. Ostatnio na stronie WWW klubu z inicjatywy Paula pojawiła się dość ciekawa ankieta skierowana do aktualnych i potencjalnych członków klubu. Padają w niej pytania sprowadzające się w zasadzie do jednego zasadniczego – „Co Ty jesteś w stanie zrobić dla Lara United?”. To także dowód na otwartość władz klubu, oczekiwanie na wszelkie uwagi, sugestie, pomysły lub opinie, które odpowiedzialne władze traktują zawsze z należytą powagą.
The new sporting challenges were accompanied by logistical ones, and yet the club – as Paul constantly repeats – is and remains amateur in nature. The board’s priority must therefore be to expand the volunteer programme. The president can count on the continued support of Kylie, who is the club’s treasurer and secretary. The club’s vice-presidents (who look after specific age groups of players) and those responsible for managing the club canteen, preparing the pitches, media relations, etc. are also volunteers. The club’s management is keen to ensure that all its structures are well coordinated. Increasing the number of members is also an important task. At the moment, this community has over 400 members, but there is so much work and so many responsibilities that there is an important task for everyone. Recently, on Paul’s initiative, a rather interesting survey aimed at current and potential club members appeared on the club’s website. It asks questions that basically boil down to one fundamental question: ‘What can you do for Lara United?’ This is also proof of the club’s openness, as it welcomes any comments, suggestions, ideas or opinions, which the responsible authorities always treat with due seriousness.
Lara United, jak często powtarza Paul, powinno być miejscem i przestrzenią niezwykle gościnną, przyjazną dla każdego nawet dla tych, którzy nie są pasjonatami sportu. Sport promuje przecież wartości ważne poza nim samym, docenia pracę zespołową, wytrwałość, pielęgnuje wreszcie ducha wspólnoty. Paul jest głęboko przekonany, że rodzinna atmosfera w klubie jest kluczowym czynnikiem napędzającym jego ciągły rozwój. Celem tego progresu powinna być szeroko pojmowana satysfakcja, czerpanie przyjemności z aktywności fizycznej. Jestem pewien, że prezes w dużej części opiera te refleksje na własnych doświadczeniach. Grywał onegdaj w football australijski i wspiera swoich synów Cody’ego i Jetta w rozwoju ich kariery piłkarskiej.
Lara United, as Paul often says, should be an extremely welcoming place and space, friendly to everyone, even those who are not passionate about sport. After all, sport promotes values that are important beyond itself, appreciates teamwork and perseverance, and ultimately fosters a spirit of community. Paul is deeply convinced that the family atmosphere at the club is a key factor driving its continuous development. The goal of this progress should be broadly understood satisfaction and enjoyment of physical activity. I am sure that the president bases these reflections largely on his own experiences. He used to play Australian football and supports his sons Cody and Jett in the development of their football careers.
Szczerze przyznam, że gestem najczęściej przeze mnie wykorzystywanym w trakcie rozmowy było przytakiwanie. Mówiąc kolokwialnie miałem nieodparte wrażenie, że w sprawach sportu nadajemy na dokładnie tych samych falach. Identycznie postrzegamy jego naturę, istotę i zadania. Podobnie identyfikujemy grożące mu niebezpieczeństwa. Jedyna różnica między nami polega jednak na tym, że Paul może aktywnie walczyć o zachowanie tego, co w sporcie najważniejsze, a ja mogę tylko o tym pisać.
I jeszcze jedna ważna uwaga. Otóż prywatna posesja Paula ozdobiona jest widocznym z daleka napisem informującym, że mieszka tu prezes Lara United. Pomyślałem sobie, że na taki akt zdobyć się może jedynie ktoś, kto jest bardzo samokrytyczny, jest świadom swoich dokonań, ale też ma świadomość,
że jest szczerze doceniany i szanowany w swojej małej ojczyźnie!
I must admit that the gesture I used most often during the conversation was nodding. Colloquially speaking, I had the overwhelming impression that we were on exactly the same wavelength when it came to sport. We perceive its nature, essence and tasks in exactly the same way. We also identify the dangers threatening it in a similar way. The only difference between us, however, is that Paul can actively fight to preserve what is most important in sport, while I can only write about it.
And one more important note. Paul’s private property is decorated with a sign visible from afar informing that the president of Lara United lives here. I thought to myself that only someone who is very self-critical, aware of their achievements, but also aware that they are sincerely appreciated and respected in their small homeland could bring themselves to do such a thing!
